IBM Tivoli Pulse 2009 Day 1 Recap

in BSM, General, IBM, Pulse 2009, Tivoli

The first day of the IBM Tivoli Pulse 2009 was jam packed with information, collaboration, networking and information overload.

The opening session featured Al Zollar’s introduction to how Tivoli is leading the way to help client’s move to a Dynamic Infrastructure and participate in the broader IBM Smarter Planet initiative. Regardless of industry, market, country or challenge, the Tivoli story continues to broaden its focus and value proposition.

The focus is broad and wide. The message is deep and penetrates into so many areas. The capability to underpin a value oriented Business Service Management (BSM) strategy grows more powerful every year.

The key BSM sessions were packed. Dan Tabor, Senior Product Manager for BSM and Pierre Coyne, BSM Marketing introduced the broad BSM portfolio and go to market message. Dan reviewed were BSM has evolved over the past year and how the future roadmap continues to position the BSM story at Tivoli further and further into the market leadership role.

The second BSM session of the day happened to be one of my internal client’s called the IBM Global Account (IGA) team. Graeme Nimmo introduced the vision of moving from event and resource management to end-to-end business process (service) management within the core of IBM. Quite literally, when a new IBMer orders a new laptop, TBSM is used to provide an end-to-end view of all key monitoring, management, KPI’s and transaction response times for that scenario.

The final BSM session was the joint presentation with Tom Cahill of generationE and myself speaking on best practices for starting out on your BSM journey. Tom complemented this nicely with the real world experiences that our only AAA Accredited Business Partner in TBSM has acquired over the years.

I recorded all of these sessions in both video and audio format. I will post those on the blog as I have time over the next couple of weeks.

The day ended at a bar sometime around 3:30AM so pardon my delay in posting the first day’s recap! 🙂

Track me down for that sticker. I still have many left.

The first long day today and the feet are sore already. The Tivoli Business Partner summit kicked off with a luncheon where I met a couple Maximo business partners and a traditional Tivoli business partner. The discussions varied to how the Smarter Planet theme was relevant to their business plans and how it was enabling them to elevate the discussion across the broad Tivoli portfolio.

The kick off session featured Al Zollar outlining how critical our business partners are to winning and success of the Smarter Planet and Dynamic Infrastructure messages. He followed up by announcing the winners for the Business Partner Innovation and Service Management awards. Congrats to generationE and ReachView who were two finalists that I’ve worked with in the past. I’ve got some video to post of these to sessions.

There were sessions on the global impact of IT on the environment, the end-to-end story across Tivoli and the Visibility, Control and Automation message as well as the call to action from our WW Sales leader. I recorded the demo that was shown during the session from our VP of Development Laura Sanders.

A quick snack and a few beverages paved the way to the opening ceremonies for the demo showcase areas. I hung out in the two key TBSM booths. You’ll see TBSM in various places but the key folks talking about it will be in one of two booths. We had a great TBSM Blimp hovering over one booth but they were forced to take it down as it was a “fire hazard”.

Had a great trip to the sushi bar again with Alan Braun (@abraun) and then hung out in the Zuri bar for a bit with Ahmed Kira, Maureen Buckley, Bill Headlee, Phil Fritz (@austingringo), Dan Tabor (@robatnad) and a slew of other Tivoli folks.

Tomorrow (today!?!?!) starts bright and early with the official kickoff and follow on track sessions. My session is at 5pm in room 101. I’ll be in the other BSM sessions at 2pm and 3:30pm in room 101 as well taping the content for all to see post-Pulse.

Track me down for the sticker and get in the contest for the best picture of something that represents BSM to you.

Wrapped up a great two days with my wife here in Las Vegas. The MGM Ka show was excellent! A must see if you’re here at Pulse this week. Spent a few more hours on the casino floor teaching my wife how to play various games. She hopped the plane home at 7am and I caught a few more z’s.

Ventured out for coffee (no coffee in the MGM Grand rooms!!) and hiked out to the Pulse check in area. The signs along the way are amusing so I took a few snaps for Flickr here.

Again this year IBMers won’t get a bag today and you’ll have to ask for one tomorrow afternoon. The guides are much thinner this year than last which is good. See pic.

Going to hop in the shower and get ready to head over to the Business Partner Summit lunch and sessions. I’ll be at both the Business Partner and the opening ceremony receptions. Track me down, get your sticker and let’s talk BSM!
