  • BSM Defined: What It Is and Should Never Be – BSM as a Guide

Remember that BSM exists only to guide ITSM. This is a critical point. BSM provides the guidance required to help biz and IT executives overcome substantial obstacles. Also remember that BSM is not a product-set but rather a mind-set. BSM is managing IT strategy in order to lead IT operations. As such, BSM has little direct cost, and a significant inv in tools is often not required for success with BSM. However, improvement projects uncovered by BSM techniques often point out the need for training, consulting, improved mgt controls, software, hardware, etc. In short, the major investment in BSM comes at the end of its process and will be justified in biz terms by that time.

BSM builds a stronger org that matches the service provided to the present and future needs of the biz and provides services in the most cost-effective manner. Both of these actions will improve the standing of IT within the biz and improve both the competitive adv and bottom line of the biz.

  • 50k+ employee organization which has invested million of dollars over the years on implementing BSM solution?
  • Public sector organization which uses open source application for implementing BSM for IT-Business alignment/integration?
  • Medical company with domain experts, medical specialists, technologists and compliance specialists?
  • Small business with 500 employees with 10-25 million annual revenue trying to build a custom application for implementing BSM for tracking revenue pit-holes and growth opportunities?

Having worked with different organizations with varying budget levels, organizational challenges, regulatory compliance requirements, business strategies, capabilities and resources for BSM/SQM – I have learned to appreciate the personalization (variability analysis) and generalization(commonality analysis) in BSM solutions.  Fred Brooks has truly said that there is “No silver bullet” when building solutions. Even so, I urge the community to think about a companies which are trying to implement BSM solution and want to know more about it, looking for answers to following questions from YOU:

  • How do I know what is the correct approach for BSM?
  • How do I know what is the road map to BSM strategy?
  • Which products do I look at based on my budget for BSM implementation?  Is there are product catalogue that I can use? Should I build or buy a solution? How do I ensure personalization to my business strategies, capabilities, and resources?
  • How do I find information about BSM principles, standards and guidelines to ensure a governance process?

These are the questions that I have encountered and want to share so that we can aim at reaching a better level of maturity for a BSM solution. I think that the BSM community does not have an answer for these questions yet. With lack of any open standards whatsoever;  would be interesting to know what others think about this challenge. Views?
