Props to BMC on Available Content in BMCDN

in Big4, BMC Software, CA, HP, IBM

Mark this up as another Big4 vendor opening up “a bit” and making some really useful content available now via their BMC Developers Network (BMCDN).

While they haven’t opened up access to all of their product resources and documentation, there’s some really good stuff up there now, especially related to the ITSM platform and Atrium CMDB.

In addition to IBM’s complete transparency and openness, this makes the second vendor to show “a bit” of what’s under the covers to the broader community. What’s up with HP, CA, Compuware, Quest Software, Digital Fuel, Oblicore, Managed Objects, etc.?

Digital Fuel rocks… they should share more info though

  • Oracle may not be a management “Big 4”, but it provides access to the docs and software (no pesky license key) for Oracle Enterprise Manager (and all others BTW, but I guess here we are talking about IT management software).

  • And wit hQuest Foglight, our intent is also similar, we are just going through the logistics of looking at how we do it. We’ve been evaluating various plans for how we might publish the majority of our technical content in an online accessible format.

Turns out, turning 15 years of PDF, proprietary doc tool content into a structured, managed online documentation system isn’t so straight forward. But, right now our intent and efforts are to do similar things here. Lawyers tend to want to take a careful review of various plans if this is the first time a company has done something of this scale. They aren’t naysayers, but cautious.

We should know more by the end of the year.

But, I’d let the community’s take be that our *intent* and goals are around openness. Just a bit harder to achieve it when you aren’t starting from scratch.

  • @Yuval – thanks for the comment – I’d love to hear more about your DF experiences and applications!

@William – great news, looks like I need a scorecard or something now. I’ll have to go kick those OEM and Moniforce tires one day and check out how “BSM Ready” they are!

@Tyeler – great! I can only imagine the hoops IBM had to go through with lawyers! You’d think that Adobe would have some magical conversion tool / platform that allows migration. Wasn’t Pagemaker like the industry standard for this stuff?

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • Thanks Doug! We see this as just a start, so expect to see more and more collaborative capabilities via BMCDN in the future. And, of course, please feel free to make further recommendations. -Fred (VP Tech Alliances and MarketZone (includes BMCDN))

  • Good to hear Fred! Now, how can we move the ball forward on some of these sticky business issues between our companies?

One of the Top 5 incoming search and general hits on my blog is from folks looking for help with integrating between the Remedy ARS/ITSM or Atrium CMDB platforms and various IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus, Netcool/Impact or TBSM products.

I’d love to see this be a grass roots thing!
